Course outline for Honours in BBE

Honours in BBE is comprised of six components that are intended to develop the skills that you will require for a successful scientific career.

Three components are assessed and will contribute to your final grade:

1. Research proposal (10 %)
Students must complete a mini research proposal inspired by ARC Discovery Grants structure that will include a budget and budget justification. The proposal will be complemented by a 10-minute oral presentation of the proposal.

2. Extended Essay (15 %)
Students must write a 4,000 word essay chosen from a list of titles relating to topics addressed in current readings (see below).

3. Research project (75 %)
Students must produce a written report with the structure of a journal article that presents the results of their research project. The written report will be complemented by a 20-minute research seminar.

In addition to the assessed tasks, there are a number of ungraded but compulsory components that must be undertaken to pass the course:

4. Skills development sessions
Short courses and seminars on ethics in animal experimentation, experimental design and statistical methods, the use of Endnote, how to write a research proposal, and how to write a research report.

5. Current readings in Brain, Behaviour and Evolution
Discussion of papers chosen by CISAB academics to run in two blocks of four weeks. Working in small groups, or singly, students will be required to take turns to present the papers and lead the discussion.

6. CISAB colloquium series
Fortnightly seminars on current developments in Animal Behaviour presented by leading researchers in the field.

There will also be regular meetings between the class and the Honours Course Convenor/Coordinator and between individual students and their supervisor.

For further details contact the BBE Honours Course Convenor, Dr Andy Barron.
