Finding food

Predators use a variety of cues to detect and identify prey. The specific cues used will depend on environmental constraints that influence sensory development.

Jacky dragons are predominantly sit-and-wait predators and rely upon motion to detect insect prey.

In separate undergraduate honours research projects in the Animal Behaviour Lab at Macquarie University, Felicity Hoese and Dorothea O'Conor demonstrated that captive lizards are selectively tuned to the movement of their regular prey items. [more].

Jacky dragons will also eat plant material, however, we do not understand how they select which plant matter to eat.
