Honours Program

About our Honours program

Honours in BBE is designed to provide students with research training in integrative approaches to Animal Behaviour. Students will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct independent research, preparing them for research-based careers or to pursue postgraduate studies (PhD or MPhil). CISAB provides a dynamic and stimulating research environment that is focused on understanding Animal Behaviour, but which approaches this area from a range of different perspectives using a wide diversity of species. This focus, along with the expertise and resources available in the Centre, makes our Honours program unique in Australia.

In our program, students conduct a research project, under the supervision of one of the academics in the Centre, write a thesis based on the results, and participate in a seminar series examining current issues and methodologies in Brain, Behaviour and Evolution.

While our honours program is designed for students majoring in BBE at Macquarie, we are also interested in recruiting dedicated and talented students from outside our undergraduate program who have undergraduate degrees majoring in Biology or Psychology.

How to enrol in Honours

Entry requirements into the Honours program are the satisfactory completion of a Bachelors degree with a coherent study in BBE (or its equivalent), an overall GPA of at least 2.5, and a GPA in third year units of at least 3.25. Students who are interested in enrolling in honours but who have not completed the BBE major, or who do not meet the GPA requirements, should contact the honours convenor (andy@galliform.bhs.mq.edu.au).

Honours may be completed full-time (BBE490) or part-time (BBE495) and students can enrol at the beginning of Semester 1 or the beginning of Semester 2.

To enrol you will need to complete an application form and submit it to the student enquires service (http://www.student.mq.edu.au/ses/)

Honours Projects

The major component of your honours year is a research project that you conduct under the supervision of one of the CISAB staff. Please refer to the honours projects currently being offered by staff members, and contact individual staff members for more information.

Honours Scholarships

Scholarships of $4,000 are available for outstanding honours candidates. For information about scholarships, please contact the honours convenor (andy@galliform.bhs.mq.edu.au).
